From 1832 to 1838, Red Clay was the capital and final council grounds of the Cherokee Nation. The original people were removed shortly after and sent along the devastating journey through the Trail of Tears. Visitors to Red Clay Historical Park are given a glimpse of what Red Clay looked like during its time as the capital. The council spring is highly important to the Cherokee people and produces an astonishing 400,000 gallons of fresh spring water daily.
