Solved Yard Flooding with Porous Pavers”]Not too long ago, a friend of ours was struggling with the rainy season in Middle Tennessee. It seemed as though, every time a hard rain would strike, his yard would flood. Then his basement would leak water, and the grass around his home would become immediately sodden and puddly.
That happens all the time in the Middle South. It is particularly problematic in big cities, because these are regions where so much concrete has been poured in such a brief period that stormwater has no place to go.
Our task was a simple one. Reduce the flooding of our friend’s property. We accomplished this by installing a permeable paver patio, a virtual water sink for the property. Now, when rainwater strikes this wrap-around patio, the water is transferred directly through the patio. Then it travels into the soil beneath, just as nature intended.
Now when it rains, the stormwater hits the porous pavers, seeping through the pavers and the fine-grit stone between the pavers. Then the water follows gravity down through several aggregate rock layers installed beneath the pavers. As the rainwater travels through the aggregate rocks, it is filtered and cleaned, finally arriving back in the soil, pure H2O, ready to recharge underground water aquifers.
